Course Objectives

Review the historical and current trends in behavioral health emergencies.
Discuss the differential diagnosis for behavioral health emergencies.
Recall basic physiology of respiratory mechanics and positional asphyxia.
Identify respiratory and cardiac pathophysiology and complications associated with BHEs.
Recognize non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic management options for patients with BHEs.
Identify special considerations in the care of pediatric patients with BHEs.
Identify safety considerations in the care of patients with embedded barbed darts from conducted electrical devices (CEDs).
Describe basic aspects of triage and safe transport of patients with BHEs.
Value the importance of patient monitoring and documentation when caring for with BHEs.
Recognize the legal considerations of consent in the emergency care of patients with BHEs.
